Distributing first creates a flat, uniform coffee bed that gives your tamp something consistent to work with. Pressure follows the path of least resistance - if your puck is uneven going in, channelling follows. What is a coffee distributor and do I need one?

A distributor levels your coffee grounds in the basket before you tamp. Without it, most people tamp an uneven puck without realising - which causes channelling, where water finds the path of least resistance rather than flowing evenly through the coffee. If pulling consistent shots matters to you, a distributor is one of the easiest improvements you can make.

What makes this different from a standard distributor?

Which size do I need - 51mm, 53mm or 58mm?

The size refers to your basket diameter. If you have a De'Longhi (Dedica or La Specialista) or SMEG 50s Style - you need 51mm. If you have a Breville Barista Express, Pro, Touch or Bambino Plus - you need 53mm. If you have a Breville Dual Boiler, Oracle, or any E61 grouphead machine - you need 58mm. Will it fit both my Dedica and La Specialista?

Yes. A distributor works inside the basket rather than locking into the grouphead, so unlike portafilters - which use different ear fittings across the De'Longhi range - a single 51mm distributor suits every De'Longhi 51mm machine.

How do I use it?
Dose your grounds into the basket, give it a gentle tap to settle, then place the distributor on top and rotate 2–3 times with light downward pressure. Lift straight up and tamp as normal. The whole process adds about five seconds to your routine.

Do I need a distributor if I already have a self-levelling tamper?

They do different jobs. A self-levelling tamper ensures your tamp pressure is applied evenly - but it can't fix an uneven bed of grounds. A distributor creates that even bed first, so your tamper has a consistent surface to work with. Used together they're the most reliable way to eliminate puck prep variables.
