Frequently Asked Questions

What type of coffee grinder do I need for espresso?
For espresso you need a burr grinder — either flat burr or conical burr. Burr grinders produce consistent, uniform particle sizes which is essential for even espresso extraction. Blade grinders chop coffee unevenly and produce inconsistent results that make it nearly impossible to dial in a repeatable shot. All grinders in our range are burr grinders.
What is the difference between a conical burr and flat burr grinder?
Conical burr grinders use two cone-shaped burrs and are the most common style for home espresso. They are generally quieter, produce less heat, and retain less coffee between grinds. Flat burr grinders use two parallel disc-shaped burrs and are favoured in commercial settings for their uniformity and speed. For home baristas, a quality conical burr grinder is the best balance of performance and value.
Do I need a separate grinder if my machine already has one built in?
Machines like the Breville Barista Express have a built-in grinder which is convenient, but the grind quality is limited compared to a dedicated standalone grinder. If you want to improve your espresso quality and have more control over your grind, a standalone burr grinder is a worthwhile upgrade — especially if you also brew filter coffee or want to use different beans across different grinders.
How do I know which grinder is right for my budget?
Entry-level grinders (under $100) are great for casual home baristas who want better results than a built-in machine grinder. Mid-range grinders ($100–$200) offer more grind settings, better burr quality, and improved consistency. Premium grinders ($300+) deliver exceptional grind uniformity for those serious about dialling in espresso. Our range covers all three tiers — start with your budget and we'll point you in the right direction.
What grinder works with my Breville or De'Longhi machine?
Most standalone grinders are compatible with any espresso machine as you simply grind into a dosing cup or directly into your portafilter. Several grinders in our range include 54mm and 58mm portafilter cradles for direct grinding — check individual product listings for compatibility details. Our entry-level ceramic burr grinder and the Artisan Barista Conical Burr Grinder are both popular choices for Breville and De'Longhi owners.
