Installation - Breville 54mm

1. Unscrew the centre bolt and remove the stock shower screen from the grouphead.
2. Clean any residue from the grouphead - a full backflush before fitting is recommended.
3. Place the contact mesh against the HD shower screen with the mesh facing down toward the puck.
4. Screw the new screen into place using your existing bolt.
5. Run a rinse cycle before your first shot.

Dialling In After Installation

After fitting the HD screen your existing grind setting may produce a faster or slower shot than before - this is normal. The more even water distribution changes how your puck extracts. Start from your current grind setting and adjust from there:

- Shot running too fast or weak - go finer on your grind
- Shot running too slow or bitter - go coarser
- Aim for a 1:2 ratio in 25–30 seconds (e.g. 18g in, 36g out)

Most people settle within 2–3 sessions. If you use a bottomless portafilter, the extraction pattern will make it immediately obvious when you've dialled in - look for a steady, centred flow with no spurting or channelling.

Why the Stock Breville Screen Has Limitations

The shower screen that ships with Breville 54mm machines uses a traditional mesh design. Water flows through the mesh and tries to spread evenly before hitting the puck - but water is attracted to the mesh material itself, causing it to grip and follow the mesh rather than flowing in controlled, predictable paths. Every shot distributes slightly differently, creating inconsistency you can't dial out through grind or tamp adjustments alone.

There's also a coverage issue. The stock screen doesn't reach the full diameter of the basket. The outer 4 to 5mm ring of your puck consistently receives significantly less water than the centre - roughly 10 to 15% of the puck bed under-saturated on every extraction. This contributes to channelling along the basket wall and shots that are harder to get right than they should be.

What the Pesado HD V2 Does Differently

The HD replaces the mesh entirely with 18 precision-machined channels. Water is directed along specific engineered paths to targeted zones across the full puck surface - including right out to the basket edge. The result is the same 18 distribution points receiving water at the same flow rate, every single shot.

The V2 update introduced an improved integrated channel design that's now compatible with all Breville 54mm machines — including the Barista Express, Infuser, and Duo-Temp Pro, which have off-centred water entry points in the grouphead that earlier versions didn't fully account for.

Can I use this with a single shot basket?

No - the 54HD works with double baskets only. If you primarily use a single shot basket, this upgrade isn't suitable for your setup.
